Purpose

The module covers the important physical illnesses that may impact on the mental health of this population. Since a complication or end-point of many of these processes may be delirium or dementia, this module also looks at how these conditions are diagnosed and treated, with particular reference to people with intellectual disability.

Target audience

The module is intended to provide information to individuals working with people with an intellectual disability who want to increase their understanding of the knowledge and theory about working with people with intellectual disability and mental health problems.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this module, you should be able to: • Have an understanding of how physical disorders may impact on mental health. • Have an understanding of the symptoms and signs of dementia and delirium and how these might present in people with intellectual disability. • Have an understanding of the treatment approach to dementia and delirium. • Have an understanding of the adjustments that may need to be made in people with intellectual disability.
