Purpose

This module reviews the symptoms of autism, how it is diagnosed and how people can be affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental disorders.

Target audience

The module aims to provide information to individuals working with people who have an autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disorder, who want to increase their understanding of the knowledge and theory about working with people with intellectual disability and mental health problems.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this module, you should be able to: 1. List the areas that may be affected in a person with a diagnosis of autism. 2. Be aware of the overlaps and differences between the diagnoses of autism, autism spectrum disorder and developmental disorder. 3. Have an understanding of the symptoms of autism and how it is diagnosed. 4. Understand why people with autism can present with difficult behaviour.
