Anxiety disorders are common in the
general population and probably more
common in people with an intellectual
disability.
2.
People with intellectual disability are less
likely to be diagnosed or appropriately
treated for an anxiety disorder.
3.
Although most people with autism become
anxious in particular circumstances, some
will also meet criteria for an anxiety
disorder and may benefit from treatment.
4.
Psychological/environmental approaches are
the first line treatment although medication can also be useful.
5.
Regular review of medication and active monitoring for side effects is required.
