Module 6 - Anxiety Disorders
Key Learning Points:

1.

Anxiety disorders are common in the

general population and probably more

common in people with an intellectual

disability.

2.

People with intellectual disability are less

likely to be diagnosed or appropriately

treated for an anxiety disorder.

3.

Although most people with autism become

anxious in particular circumstances, some

will also meet criteria for an anxiety

disorder and may benefit from treatment.

4.

Psychological/environmental approaches are

the first line treatment although medication can also be useful.

5.

Regular review of medication and active monitoring for side effects is required.
