Psychological therapies for people with an intellectual disability
Do not require any adaptation to meet the needs of people with an ID.
May require using less verbal therapies such as art, drama and music therapies.
Are well researched with an excellent evidence base.
Behaviour therapy
Does not require an understanding of what is driving the behaviour.
Is rarely used for people with an intellectual disability.
May be used to treat a specific problem behaviour such as aggression or self injury.
Cognitive therapies
Are always an appropriate treatment for people with an intellectual disability.
Examine the interlinked triad of thoughts, emotions and actions.
Never require the completion of ‘homework’ tasks.
Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic therapies
Do not address the consequences of early life experience
Involve very long periods of treatment.
Do not require a person to have good verbal skills.
Psychological work with this population may require
More lengthy treatment periods than in the general population.
The help of practitioners with specific skills and experience
Both of the above.
