Challenging Behaviour
People with intellectual disability can present with behaviours that are difficult for carers to respond
to safely or appropriately. Examples include aggression, destructive behaviour, self-injury, non-
compliance, screaming, pica (eating inedible objects), overactivity, inappropriate sexualised
behaviours, disturbed sleep patterns, regurgitation of food, faecal smearing and wandering among
  others.
Understanding these problem behaviours is important as they are common and are associated with
high rates of physical and mental illness, mortality, poor quality of life, stigma and exclusion, and
many of these behaviours have inherent risks for carers as well as the person themselves.
